Why 16mm is the default now
Three years ago the thin core was the serious player's choice and the thick core was the beginner's. Thermoforming changed that. Once a stiff, foam-walled unibody shell was doing the power work, the core no longer had to — and a 16mm thermoformed paddle turned out to hit as hard as most people need while forgiving far more. Plenty of high-level players now choose 16mm precisely because the forgiveness lets them swing harder with less risk. The 14mm did not go away; it became the deliberate choice for a narrower player, which is why we give it its own page at best 14mm paddles.
The practical consequence is that "best 16mm paddle" is close to "best paddle" — almost everything worth buying is offered in 16mm. So this page does not rank on thickness. It ranks on what you want the thickness for.
What separates one 16mm paddle from another
Shape. The core sets dwell and damping; the outline sets where the sweet spot sits. An elongated 16mm frame gives reach and leverage with the sweet spot higher on the face; a standard 16mm frame puts it lower, wider and closer to the hand. The 14mm is quicker off the face and suits a fast, front-of-court game where you consistently find the middle. It is a narrower choice, not a graduation.
Are 16mm paddles good for intermediate players?
They are the thickness we recommend for most intermediates.
