Swing Weight & Twist Weight Explained

Three different weight numbers, three different feels. The one on the box is the least useful of the lot.

Two paddles can weigh exactly the same on a scale and feel like completely different tools in your hand. That's because the number printed on the box — static weight — is the least useful of three that actually matter. Swing weight tells you how heavy a paddle feels to swing, and twist weighttells you how stable it is on off-center hits. Learn to read all three and you'll stop being surprised by how a paddle plays.

The three weight numbers

All three describe mass, but they measure it in different places, and that's the whole point. Static weight is how much mass there is. Swing weight is where that mass sits along the length of the paddle. Twist weight is where the mass sits acrossthe width. Static weight

Static weight is the paddle on a kitchen scale — most sit right around 8 ounces. It's the number every listing quotes, and it's the one you should trust least. Here's why: two paddles at the same static weight can carry that mass in totally different places. Move the weight toward the head and the paddle hits harder but feels sluggish; keep it in the handle and the same total weight feels quick and light. Static weight can't tell you which one you're holding.

It's not useless — very light paddles (under about 7.5 oz) are easy on the arm but need you to supply power, and heavier ones (over about 8.3 oz) add mass behind the ball. But it's a starting point, not a verdict. The next two numbers are the verdict.

Swing weight

Swing weight is the single most useful spec almost nobody prints. It measures how heavy the paddle feels through the swing by accounting for how far the mass sits from your hand — the same reason a hammer held by the head feels lighter than one held by the handle.

The trade-off is direct: higher swing weight adds power and stability — more mass driving through the ball, less deflection on contact — but it slows your hands in fast exchanges and tires your arm faster. A higher twist weight means the face stays truer on a mishit — the paddle doesn't torque, so the ball goes closer to where you aimed and keeps more pace. In plain terms, a high twist weight is what a "big, stable sweet spot" actually is, measured.

  • Tape at 12 o'clock (top of the head): raises swing weight the most — more power and plow-through, slower hands.
  • Tape at 3 and 9 o'clock (the sides): raises twist weight — more stability and forgiveness on off-center hits, with a smaller swing-weight bump.
  • Tape near the throat or handle: adds static weight and stability with little swing-weight change — a heavier but still quick feel.

Start with a small amount, add symmetrically so the paddle doesn't pull to one side, and re-tape as you dial it in.
