Delamination and Core Crush, Explained

The thermoformed era raised the power ceiling and introduced two failure modes with it. Both make a paddle hit harder before they make it useless — which is the whole problem.

Between 2022 and 2025 the paddle market went almost entirely thermoformed, and power levels rose sharply. Along with the power came two structural failure modes that barely existed before, and a competitive integrity problem that governing bodies are still working through.

This guide explains what the two failures are, how to check whether your paddle has either, and what happens next if it does. It is a trust and maintenance page — there are no product recommendations on it, because no paddle is immune and buying a different one is not the first answer.

What delamination is

A modern paddle is a sandwich: a carbon fiber face, adhesive, and a polymer honeycomb core, all bonded together and — in a thermoformed paddle — hot-molded into a single unibody shell with the edges compressed.

Delamination is the bond between the face and the core failing. The face separates from what is underneath it, either in a patch or across a larger area, and instead of being rigidly attached it starts behaving like a membrane stretched over the core.

The counter-intuitive part is what that does to performance. A delaminated paddle hits harder, not softer. A face that is free to flex acts like a trampoline, storing and returning more energy than a properly bonded one. Players have described delaminated paddles as suddenly feeling incredible — which is exactly why it became a competitive issue rather than merely a warranty one.

What core crush is

Core crush is a different failure with a similar outcome. The polymer honeycomb cells directly behind the hitting area collapse under repeated hard contact, leaving a softened, deformed region of core.

A crushed area also flexes more than it should, so it also produces extra power — and it also produces inconsistency, because the paddle now responds differently in the crushed zone than everywhere else. In severe cases the deformation is visible as a dent or a lump when you look across the face at an angle.

Core crush is most associated with thin cores, hard hitters, and paddles that have taken a lot of high-speed contact in the same spot. It is a wear failure rather than a manufacturing defect, which affects how warranties treat it.

Why the thermoformed era brought this on

Thermoforming compresses the edges of the paddle into a continuous shell, which stiffens the perimeter so it returns energy to the ball instead of absorbing it into flex. That is the mechanism behind the power increase of the last few years, and our thermoformed paddles guide covers it properly.

The same stiffness concentrates stress. Not every thermoformed paddle fails, and manufacturing has improved substantially since the first wave. How to check your paddle in two minutes

The tap test. Tap gently across the face with a knuckle, working systematically from edge to edge. A healthy paddle sounds consistent everywhere. A delaminated area sounds different — hollower, duller, or with a rattle. This is the standard check and it is surprisingly reliable.

The light test. Hold the paddle at a shallow angle under a bright light and sight along the face. Look for bulges, dips or ripples that break the reflection. A crushed core region or a lifted face shows up as a distortion in the reflected line.

The edge check. Look and feel along the edge guard for gaps, lifting, or a face that no longer sits flush against the frame.

The performance check. The one that catches most cases in practice: has the paddle suddenly started hitting harder or feeling different in one area, with no change to your technique or the ball? A paddle that improves on its own has not improved.

Why this is a rules problem

A paddle that delaminates gains power without changing its appearance and without the player necessarily doing anything wrong. That creates two distinct issues: players who unknowingly compete with an out-of-specification paddle, and — the reason it became a scandal — deliberate modification to induce the effect.

Governing bodies have responded with on-site testing at higher levels of competition and with delistings of paddle models found to fall out of specification in use. For recreational play, none of this is enforced. But a paddle that has genuinely delaminated is out of specification whether or not anyone checks, and it is worth knowing that before you rely on it in a league.

What warranties typically cover

Most major manufacturers offer a warranty period against manufacturing defects, and delamination — a bond failure — is usually treated as one. Core crush is more often treated as normal wear, on the reasoning that it results from use rather than from a fault, though this varies by brand and by how early the failure appeared.

Terms differ enough between brands that we will not summarize them as though they were uniform. What is worth doing, practically: keep your proof of purchase, contact the manufacturer directly rather than the retailer for a structural failure, and photograph the paddle including the tap-test area before you send anything. Buying from an authorized seller matters here — warranty support on a paddle bought through a gray-market listing is often nonexistent.

Reducing the risk

You cannot prevent a bond failure that was going to happen, but a few things genuinely help.

Do not leave a paddle in a hot car. Heat cycling is hard on adhesives and on foam, and a car in summer sun reaches temperatures well beyond anything the paddle sees in play.

Do not use it as a ball retriever or a wall. Edge impacts load the bond lines in ways contact with a ball never does.

Rotate paddles if you play daily. Two paddles used alternately last more than twice as long as one used constantly, because the failure modes here are cumulative-load driven.

Delamination and core crush are real, specific to modern construction, and identifiable with a knuckle and two minutes. The tell that matters most is a paddle that suddenly feels better than it did — treat that as a symptom rather than as luck, run the tap test, and contact the manufacturer if it sounds wrong.
